Maple Pecan Sticky Buns

Iโ€™ve never been a huge fan of sticky buns because I find many of them teeth-screamingly sweet. That said, these dial down the sweetness in favor of flavor, courtesy of two of my favorite things: pecans and maple syrup. Andย having the two swaddled in a butterscotch-like caramel seems to make each one taste even better than they do on their own. I was intrigued byโ€ฆ

Supermoon Bakehouse

When I come to the states, with apologies to all whoโ€™ve urged me to check out a croissant, Kouign amann, or macaron shop, since I can get all those things pretty easily in France, I tend to stick with local favorites. I donโ€™t think anyone from San Francisco is coming to Paris for a burrito, nor in anyone flying over from Brooklyn in search ofโ€ฆ

Apple Calvados Cake

This seasonย saw a particularly excellent crop ofย cookbooks come to the forefront. But one that stood out for me wasย The London Cookbook by Aleksandra Crapanzano. When my copy came in the mail, I opened up the stately, deep blue cover, which revealed enticing pages of spectacularly simple, fresh food, the kinds I like, that are being cooked in London today. Spiced Carrots with Freekeh and Labneh,โ€ฆ

The Beast Barbecue in Paris

[UPDATE 2020: The Beast closed during Covid and has not reopened, which may be permanent. Will update this post if the restaurant reopens.] Iโ€™ve been taking a breather writingย about American-oriented businesses in Paris. Not because I donโ€™tย like them, but because there were so many of them that it was hard to keep up, and they were no longer a novelty. And while the hamburger crazeโ€ฆ

Winter Salad with Pecans, Pears and Gorgonzola

I eat a salad almost every day. I grab a big bowl, make dressing in it, then toss in whatever ingredients I have on hand. It might be a hard-boiled egg, miscellaneous greens, bits of roast chicken, slivered carrots, shredded cabbage, toasted nuts, cherry tomatoes, crumbled cheese, and so forth โ€“ whatever I have on hand. (But hold the alfalfa sprouts; does anyone really likeโ€ฆ

Sugarplum Cake Shop

There are a lot of things I like about living in Paris. Thereโ€™s shopping at the outdoor market and knowing the vendors and having them give you the good peaches, and not sticking a few icky ones in the bottom of the bag. Picking up a still-warm baguette and ripping the end off the very moment you step outside the bakery. And getting to goโ€ฆ

Chocolate Pecan Pie

I usually try to make pecan pie every year for Thanksgiving. The list of ingredients sends me on a little scavenger hunt around, as American baking in a foreign country can do. And in spite of my best efforts, I donโ€™t always quite make it. But Iโ€™ve gotten wiser over the years and brings things back with me from the States for this all-American dessert,โ€ฆ

German Chocolate Cupcakes

Believe it or not, thereโ€™s been a spate of cupcake places opening inโ€ฆof all placesโ€”Paris. I havenโ€™t been in to any of them, but I should probably go at some point since Iโ€™m not sure if itโ€™s just a fad thatโ€™s going to end soon, or something that might be here to stay. Parisians arenโ€™t especially fond of cakes with thick layers of frosting orโ€ฆ

Holiday Snack Mix

I gave this recipe out a year or so ago on the site. But because itโ€™s so easy to put together, I made it yet again last night, to have as a little nibble with some white wine before dinner. And we couldnโ€™t eat it fast enough. (And almost didnโ€™t have room for dinner.) Itโ€™s adapted from The Sweet Life in Paris. So for thoseโ€ฆ
