Plum Flaugnarde

Once again, I found myself with an overload of fruit. Sure, I like pears and apples, which showย up at the market on the cusp of autumn. But I want summer to last as long as possible. So when I see good nectarines, peaches, and plums lingering at the market, I pack my market basketย to the brim,ย carefully making sure the delicate fruits arenโ€™t going to getโ€ฆ

Benoit Castel Pastry Shop

Thereโ€™s an exciting wave of pastry places opening in Paris. The last time that happened to such an extent was whenย Pierre Hermรฉย kicked off a new wave of excitement about la pรขtisserie nearly two decades ago.ย What new is that many of the pastry shops are outside of traditional areas. Visitors often say they want to go to places โ€œoff the beaten path,โ€ and the combination ofโ€ฆ

Tu biโ€™Shvat Cake

Iโ€™ve never given Israeli food all much thought. Sure, Iโ€™d had my fill of falafels and hummus in my lifetime, but there is a trip in my future and I was at a dinner party the other night and the woman hosting us had lived in Israel for a number of years and said it was her favorite place in the world. Bircher Muesli

I have quite a few โ€œissuesโ€, including an aversion food thatโ€™s blue which wasnโ€™t intended by nature to be so (I donโ€™t understand whatโ€™s up with that โ€˜blue raspberryโ€™ soda), I donโ€™t like getting dressed first thing in the morning or talking to others for at least the first hour of the day, I get uneasy when being driven anywhere by a taxi or hiredโ€ฆ

Le glaneur

There is a French term, un glaneur, which describes a person who who glanes. If you donโ€™t have any idea what that means, youโ€™re not alone. I had to look it up in my French dictionary and there it was, just above the word glander, which they translated as, โ€œto fart around.โ€ Thereโ€™s a heckuva lot of French verbs out there, and Iโ€™ve been tryingโ€ฆ

Plum Kernel Ice Cream Recipe

Last month, I received an invitation to visit the French Sรฉnat where laws are debated and decided on, or not. Like most of the government buildings here in Paris, this is one spectacular. Itโ€™s very ornate with lots of gilding and chandeliers and gardens that are plucked and shaved within an inch of their life. Gardens are well-manicured in France and are meant to beโ€ฆ

Duck with Prunes Recipe

This past weekend I went to the Marchรฉ des Producteurs de Pays, a lively little outdoor event where people come from across France to sell their edible wares here in Paris. Naturally, there were lots of mountain cheeses, specialty honey, and regional wines. But I was on a mission to stock up on les pruneaux dโ€™Agen since I knew the producers (producteurs) would be thereโ€ฆ

French Tuna

Every time Iโ€™m at G. Detou buying chocolate or whatever, I look at the tins of tuna lined up near the window. Iโ€™ve never picked any of them up, but I like looking at the pretty designs and graphic, stylized lettering. When I was there last week, I thought, โ€œWhy not try them out?โ€ So I bought these two. Since then, theyโ€™ve been sitting onโ€ฆ
