Weekend Links & Holiday Recipes

Winter is just about here. And no, it doesnโ€™t have to suck. True, thereโ€™s not much โ€“ if any โ€“ snow in Paris โ€“ which is something I miss. (When weโ€™ve had it, it makes Paris more luminous and pretty.) But thereโ€™s no shortage of cold. In addition to being the time to unpack all oneโ€™s winter gear, and sadly pack up the t-shirts andโ€ฆ

Multigrain and Seed Biscotti

I was browsing some older cookbooks recently. There are so many really great new cookbooks that come out every season that itโ€™s easy to forget some of the beloved ones waiting patiently on our shelves, for us to return to them. Before electronics came on the scene, I used to curl up every night under the cover with an actual book or two, before dozingโ€ฆ

Caffe Panna Ice Cream Shop

Someone from San Francisco told me that there were now too many ice cream shops in the city. I didnโ€™t think that was possible, but I guess things have changed since I moved away. (There are also some amazing bakeries there as well, which I donโ€™t think is anything to grouse about either.) Just like in San Francisco, not only has the baking scene inโ€ฆ

Pasta Bolognese

A while back I made Meatballs Subs because I had a craving. Theyโ€™re not that difficult to make and when you make them at home, you can use better ingredients than the versions you get elsewhere. Fortunately, thereโ€™s good bread in France and no shortage of cheese. And meatballs arenโ€™t much of a challenge to make either. (Interestingly, a few weeks after I posted thatโ€ฆ

Lemon-Almond Snack Cake

This summer, for our vacation, we did our usual road trip, with stops to visit various friends in France, with a delicious detour to Spain. We always look forward to visiting our French friends who have a home in Burgundy, and not just for all the Chablis, jambon persillรฉ, Dijon mustard and gougรจres. (Oh, and they also have a poolโ€ฆ) But since they live abroad,โ€ฆ

Fig Leaf and Honey Ice Cream

In terms of favorite ice cream flavors, itโ€™s likely that Fig Leaf Ice Cream isnโ€™t at the top of your list. But once you taste it, youโ€™ll probably add it. Itโ€™s tricky to provide an exact description of the flavor, which is coconutty, and references figs, but is its own flavor in and of itself. Living in a city, I donโ€™t have a fig tree,โ€ฆ

Tomato Tart

I didnโ€™t know what to make for dinner the other night. I had some tart dough tucked away in the freezer, and because I was having trouble closing the door (erโ€ฆwhat else is new?), I realized it was time to clear some of the stuff out. But I also had some beautiful tomatoes on hand, and a tub of fromage frais (fresh spreadable cheese), whichโ€ฆ

Nectarine-Berry Popsicles

During the summer, at outdoor flea markets and brocantes, youโ€™ll invariably find me on my hands and knees, rifle through boxes that are jammed with stuff, since ya never know what youโ€™ll pluck out. Iโ€™m particularly keen on finding old French baking items, although Iโ€™ve learned that all those pretty little tin tart molds are best left to clutter someone elseโ€™s kitchen drawers. And sinceโ€ฆ

Panzanella: Bread and Tomato Salad

Tomatoes didnโ€™t originally come from Italy, but theyโ€™ve certainly made up for lost time. Now itโ€™s hard to think of Italian cuisine without them, from classic dishes, from Pasta allโ€™Arrabiata and Salade Caprese, to Pizza Margherita and Panzanella, a bread and tomato salad thatโ€™s one of my favorite things to make, and eat. This summer salad gets tossed with basil, which boosts its appeal (atโ€ฆ
