Beet and Ginger Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Yotam Ottolenghi seems to be everyoneโ€™s favorite cookbook author. After meeting him, he became mine, too. (But if I could stay in your top ten, thatโ€™d be appreciated.) His previous books focused on the savory side of Middle Eastern cooking, but Yotam was a pastry chef prior to being a restaurant co-owner (with Sami Tamimi) and cookbook author, and anyone whoโ€™s walked into one ofโ€ฆ

Mint-White Chocolate Ice Cream Shell

I was a sucker for soft-serve ice cream when I was a kid. The machine that made those swirly cones at Carvel mesmerized me, as well as on the Mister Softee truck, although they didnโ€™t drive around our neighborhood when I was a kid. (Those were the days of the Good Humor truck.) That was how I discovered sprinkles, which we called jimmies in Newโ€ฆ

Quiche with greens, bacon and feta

While visiting friends in the countryside toward the end of the summer (โ€ฆis it over already?), I met a woman who grew the most lovely little lettuces, which she sold at the local market. Which was basically a table with several baskets of her stunning greens sitting on it. If you havenโ€™t had eaten lettuce just a few minutes (or even hours) out of theโ€ฆ

Balsamic Glazed Roast Pork

Itโ€™s been a goofy month. I donโ€™t know if the word โ€œgoofyโ€ exists or translates into French, but cโ€™est comme รงa, as they say, or โ€œthatโ€™s how it is.โ€ It seems like everything got discombobulated;ย even my vacation plans were thwarted by a server outage and a nasty jellyfish sting, whose only upside was that it was on my thigh โ€“ near, but not on, myโ€ฆ

Baked Rice Pudding (Riz au lait) with plum compote

One great thing about France is you can drive around, stop in any number of small towns, from the Jura to Normandy, and check out regional specialties. People often come to Paris and ask about where they can get a good cassoulet, or bouillabaisse, and they look positively crestfallen when I tell them they really need to go to Gascony or Marseille, respectively, if theyโ€ฆ

Provencal Chicken with Pastis

In France, youโ€™re either a juilettiste or aoรปtien, meaning you take your annual summer vacation in July or August, although many get more than four weeks off (and some get less), so thereโ€™s room for a few crossovers as well. I donโ€™t know what the word for someone who takes their summer vacation during both months isโ€ฆchanceux?ย (lucky?) โ€“ or if there is a word forโ€ฆ

Sโ€™mores Ice Cream Pie with Salted Butter Chocolate Sauce

Summer is a great time for ice cream. Itโ€™s cool, itโ€™s creamy, and Iโ€™ve yet to meet someone who doesnโ€™t like ice cream. Itโ€™s the absolute crowd-pleaser when the temperatures climb. Add toasted marshmallows, salted butter chocolate sauce, and Graham crackers? Iโ€™m in, all the way. Unlike others, I donโ€™t have nostalgic memories that involved Sโ€™mores, so Iโ€™m making up for lost time. This Sโ€™moreโ€ฆ

Green Pea and Radish Tartines

Once upon a time, there was something calledย I Hate Peasย โ€“ French fries with ridges that you baked in the oven, aimed at kids who wouldnโ€™t eat their vegetables. They supposedly had all the nutrients of peas without whatever it is about peas that apparently some kids donโ€™t like. They didnโ€™t last long, and I (or my mom) was fortunate because I always loved vegetables, includingโ€ฆ

Coffee Cajeta Ice Cream

Who knew that Mexico was famous for ice cream? I didnโ€™t, until my first trip many years ago, and saw all the heladeriasย stirring up ice cream and pushcarts, parked on sidewalks, handing out popsicles. It was my first visit and Iย had no idea what a remarkable range of flavors Mexicans incorporated into their scoops and paletas. There was chocolate, corn, coffee, cheese, peanut, and riceโ€ฆ
