Le Jules Verne

Alain Ducasse recently took over la direction of Le Jules Verne*, the high-end restaurant in the Eiffel Tower that had lost its reputation and luster as a fine dining destination during the past several years. I hadnโ€™t ever eaten there, since its reputation had preceded it. But this week, I finally got my chance to dine there. We waited patiently for the private elevator ofโ€ฆ

Breizh Cafe: Buckwheat crepes in Paris

Le Brunch is indeed available at some places in Paris, but Iโ€™m not necessarily at my bestย being around people first thing in the morningโ€”and Iโ€™m not so fond of Le Brunch either. So Iย compromised on the more civilized hour of 1pm for dining on the weekends. Not much is open in Paris on Sunday, so I had suggested Breizh Cafรฉ, a tidy corner spot specializingโ€ฆ

Lโ€™Entredgeu

One of the best restaurants in Paris is one that I have a hard time recommending. Itโ€™s not that the food isnโ€™t consistently very good-to-excellent. Nor is the service anything less than friendly and sincere. One problem with Lโ€™Entredgeu is that itโ€™s way up in the 17th, pretty much away from everything else. Thatโ€™s relatively minor, though. The big problem for me is the name;โ€ฆ

Mon Vieil Ami

While I wait for my life (ie, my television and internet) to return to normalโ€ฆ.(although Iโ€™d be happy if theyโ€™d just return. period)โ€ฆI left my perch in the Wi-Fi equipped Place des Vosges long enough to have a really nice dinner at Mon Vieil Ami, that I thought Iโ€™d recount. I was going stir-crazy sitting at home and was so bored that I almost hadโ€ฆ

Cafe des Musees

(UPDATE: Cafรฉ des Musรฉes changed owners in the Fall of 2014 and Iโ€™ve heard mixed reports from locals and visitors. I havenโ€™t been back since the change of chef andย ownership but from all reports, it is a completely different restaurant and you should not expect to find the same dishes as noted in this post.) Located a few blocks north of the historic place desโ€ฆ

Tipping in Paris

ย One of the most confusing things for visitors to Paris is figuring out the tip system. Unlike the United States where tips are expected (and considered part of the wages paid), in France by law,ย service compris is always included in the price, wherever you eat or drink. Waiters are paid a living wage, similar to what someone who works in a storeย or bakery is paidโ€ฆ.

Trieste Address Book

Trieste is located in the upper corner of Italy, located just at the border of Slovenia. Itโ€™s a compact port city and in addition to Slovenian influences, you might be surprised to come across a shop carrying beer steins, since there are residual Hungarian and Austrian influences in the melange as well. But unlike other Italian cities, youโ€™ll find people drinking big glasses of beer,โ€ฆ

Paris Pas Cher: 8 Money-Saving Tips for Paris

When I moved to Paris, I was pretty shocked at how expensive things were. And I donโ€™t mean Louis Vuitton suitcases or Kelly bags. Something as simple as a sponge at the supermarket would cost 4โ‚ฌ or a plastic storage container at the BHV might run you 15โ‚ฌ around here. Ouch! Then I learned about the Paris pas cher stores all over town. Although concentratedโ€ฆ
