Hyeres, Provence

I had no sooner returned from Sicily, then I unpacked my suitcase, re-packed my suitcase, and headed back out, to Provence. Even though Iโ€™d just returned from a ten-day trip, my other half was doing a project in the city I went along for the ride because, 1) Who wants to be sitting in a hot apartment, alone, in the summer, when you could beโ€ฆ

Les Provinces and Cafe des Abattoirs

My perfect day in Paris is one that starts at the Marchรฉ dโ€™Aligre. Iโ€™d get there first thing in the morning, around 9 A.M. as the flea market vendors are unloading their trucks, scoping out treasures as they unpack them. (Before the rest of humanity descends on the market.) Iโ€™d rifle through the boxes of knives, cast-off kitchenware, and perhaps score a vintage Le Creusetโ€ฆ

q & a

I just returned from a four-week book tour where I met a lot of people. Everyone was incredibly nice and it was a treat, although because of the nature of the events, it wasnโ€™t possible to spend lots of one-on-one time with anyone โ€“ including myself. However, I tried to answer as many questions as possible. The most frequently asked questions were; โ€œWhere have youโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m sorry, Vancouver

A while back I was discussing something with a Canadian friend in Paris. Until โ€“ at one point, she stopped the discussion and said, โ€œYโ€™know, Iโ€™m Canadian. I donโ€™t have an opinion.โ€ And while that may be true, before touching down in Vancouver, I decided to give crowd-sourcing where I should go for dinner another go, since I knew almost nothing about where to goโ€ฆ

Belleville Brulerie & Holybelly

UPDATE: SInce I first published this, Belleville Brรปlerie has moved to a large location with a shop. More info at their website. They have also opened a cafรฉ, La Fontaine de Belleville. Hoo-boy, do I remember the bunch of flack (to say the least!) for mentioning way-back-when that the coffee in Paris could use a bit of, um, upgrading. I was recently reminiscing about thatโ€ฆ

Le Nemrod Cafe in Paris

Itโ€™s hard to pick a favorite cafรฉ in Paris. Contrary to what people think, few people that live in Paris will cross the city to stop into a casual place for a drink, or something to eat. Most go to a local spot where the servers know you, where youโ€™ll get a friendly greeting because the staff recognizes you as a regular. Itโ€™s is aโ€ฆ

En Vrac

Iโ€™ve been trying to tick off some of the places on the wad of post-its that are next to my front door, noting spots Iโ€™ve been meaning to visit in Paris but havenโ€™t quite gotten around to. There are a few restaurants, some pastry shops that at some point piqued my interest, and a couple of Turkish sandwich places that really should be moved toโ€ฆ

Les Enfants Rouges

To be honest, Iโ€™m not one to run to the newest restaurant right after it opens. The main reason being that I donโ€™t like being disappointed, nor do I like eating bad food. It happened recently at a new place in town that had gotten some good press (which, suspiciously, may have been because they were invited guests), and found myself wishing Iโ€™d shelled outโ€ฆ

A Very Good Steak frites in Paris

(UPDATE: Cafรฉ des Musรฉes changed owners in the Fall of 2014 and Iโ€™ve heard mixed reports from locals and visitors. I havenโ€™t been back since the change of chef andย ownership but from all reports, it is a completely different restaurant and you should not expect to find the same dishes mentioned in this post.) Iโ€™m not the only one who is sometimes confounded by theโ€ฆ
