Judy Rodgers

I was deeply saddened when I heard that someone who happens to have been a culinary icon (and hero) of mine, and who I was fortunate enough to work with in the kitchen, is no longer standing behind her stove. This morning I learned that Judy Rodgers the chef-owner of Zuni Cafรฉ, had passed. I was fortunate the work with Judy for a few yearsโ€ฆ

Dandelion Chocolate

One of the interesting things about leading chocolate tours is that I get to meet a wide swatch of people who have various interests. Some just like to come and taste, others have more professional aspirations. When Todd Masonis joined me a few years ago, we had some talks about his idea of opening a bean-to-bar hot chocolate salon. I had a pretty good amountโ€ฆ

The Padlocks of Paris

The love locks are a curious phenomenon in Paris. Although Parisians have a reputation for being romantic, theyโ€™re not necessarily known for spontaneity. Strikes are planned well in advance so everyone can prepare, people have their favorite bakeries which they frequent regularly, and folks keep to themselves on the mรฉtro. One might say that moderation is generally the watchword โ€“ one doesnโ€™t want to beโ€ฆ

Cotogna Restaurant

Iโ€™m going to get this out of the way right off the bat: I worked with Mike Tusk at Chez Panisse โ€“ he was a cook upstairs in the cafรฉ and I was downstairs in the pastry department, and although I knew he was a good cook, I was blown away the first time I ate at his restaurant, Quince. I went there shortly afterโ€ฆ

A Visit @Twitter

Iโ€™m going to take a wild stab and say that if I throw out the number โ€œ140โ€, for the majority of you, itโ€™s likely that โ€œTwitterโ€ comes to mind. For the rest of you, Twitter is the hottest social media network to breakout from the pack in the last few years. During my trip to San Francisco, I played a little Twitter-tag with one ofโ€ฆ

Smitten Ice Cream

Whenever I land in San Francisco, I invariably arrive with a number of places to visit that I want to tick off my list. As Iโ€™ve learned from previous experience, itโ€™s just not possible to go everywhere โ€“ especially when you have to wait up to 45 minutes for a bus to come, making a round-trip to an ice cream shop a full afternoon eventโ€ฆ.

Recchiutiโ€™s Asphalt Jungle Mix

Michael Recchiuti was recently here in Paris for a few weeks, visiting, and eating his way around town. Because heโ€™s a chocolatier (from San Francisco), of course, he concentrated on chocolate. Interestingly I couldnโ€™t remember how we met, but he recalled the event pretty well. Apparently a group of us had been invited to Robert Steinbergโ€™s kitchen, since he was working on developing ScharffenBerger chocolateโ€ฆ.
