Haj Kahil

When I left the restaurant Haj Kahil after lunch, I said to someone โ€“ โ€œThat was the best day of my life.โ€ When Erin, who was dining next to me, took a bite of the fried Halloumi cheese, her whole body softened, her eyes dimmed, and she looked as if she had been lulled into a trance. And when someone tried to talk to her,โ€ฆ

Da Dong/Squid/Les Jules Verne/Yquem

UPDATE: The Jules Verne restaurant is now under new ownership, with a new chef. I now have conclusive proof that Iโ€™m not imagining it: There is an international conspiracy to get me to eat squid. Before you say, โ€œYou should try it breaded and dipped in spicy sauce!โ€ or โ€œYou havenโ€™t tried had my Thai-style squid!โ€ โ€“ I should let you know that Iโ€™ve installedโ€ฆ

Wild Rice Salad with Roasted Vegetables and Lemon-Tahini Dressing

Over the past few weeks, Iโ€™ve been trying to use up things I already have in the cupboard, plus eat seasonally, plus make things that are relatively easy to make โ€“ and this salad fit the bill on all counts. It combines tahini with wild rice and used up some of the marvelous root vegetables that I canโ€™t help buying at the market, even thoughโ€ฆ

Sweet and Crispy Chicken Wings

Iโ€™m always a little late to the party. For example, last week, the Super Bowl festivities took place. But honestly, I have an excuse. Actually I have a few. Since I donโ€™t live in America, there isnโ€™t much enthusiasm for American football around here. When I tried to explain the concept of the grandeur of Super Bowl Sunday to Romain, he gave me that typicallyโ€ฆ

The Good News andโ€ฆThe Good News

I have two bits of good news that are going to make you very, very happy. Okay, they make me happy. You, on the other hand, might not give a ratโ€™s derriรจre. One is that the bakery that makes the sesame baguette is going to stay open for an indeterminate amount of time. That means that I wonโ€™t be cut off from my Crack Baguetteโ€ฆ.

Fermeture Dรฉfinitive

This always happens. You go away, then come back, and something hits you like a ton of bricks. This morning, after being away for a little more than a week, Romain looked at me, and said, โ€œDaveedโ€ฆje veux te dire quelque choseโ€ฆโ€ And before he could finish la phrase, I knew exactly what he was going to say, and I finished the sentence for himโ€ฆ.

My Favorite Sesame Baguette

A woman who writes highly-regarded bread books recently contacted me. She was coming to Paris, and wanted to ask me some questions about various bakeries and their baguettes, specifically, which I liked. I wrote her back and told her that when you live in Paris, you buy your bread from the local boulangerie (there are four within a block of my apartment) rather spending thirtyโ€ฆ

Hummus Recipe

I began my cooking career at a vegetarian restaurant in Ithaca, New York. Although youโ€™ve probably heard of the other vegetarian restaurant in town, I worked up the hill at the Cabbagetown Cafรฉ. While we werenโ€™t as famous, the food was really good. Farmers would come in lugging crates of dirty root vegetables, crispy radishes, and slender green pea pods, and weโ€™d make what weโ€ฆ
