Cranberry Upside Down Cake

I haveย to eat fruit every day. If I donโ€™t, I wither away psychologically. When I was in New York for a while this winter, it was tough because there werenโ€™tย a lot of fruits available. I like apples and pears very much, but local pears had finished and while an apple a day may keep the doctor away, I needed something a little more exciting toโ€ฆ

Cinnamon Ice Cream

My favorite thing that I bought this year is this old battered gelato dish, which was my score at a street market in Palermo. It was sitting there all by its lonesome, and there I was, to give it a happy home โ€“ it was kismet. (Or maybe itโ€™s called something else in Italian, but Iโ€™m just happy I stumbled across such a fabulous findโ€ฆ

Black Currant Jam

Someone recently asked me why I do what I do. More specifically, what compelled me. They were particularly focused on how I was likely most concerned with the finished product, asking me if that was my goal when I cooked and baked. I thought about it for a bit, and realized that the goal has very little to do with it; I like picking throughโ€ฆ

Hot Chocolate Pudding

I had some friends over for dinner recently who were moving away, which is always sad, and they were in the full-on stress of moving; packing up boxes, dealing with logistics, selling most of their things, and taking care of the details of demรฉnagement. I had been leafing through Sinfully Easy Delicious Desserts by chocolate expert (and comrade in chocolate) Alice Medrich, who I wasโ€ฆ

Baci di Dama Cookies

Neither one of us is quite sure how we connected, but so be it. But somehow I kind of remembered Terresa Murphy from San Francisco. However sheโ€™s been living in Paris since the mid-80s, so my memory is either better than I thought, or my mind is playing tricks on me. (Which is a whole nother road that Iโ€™d prefer not walk down right now.)โ€ฆ

Medlar Jelly

As I continue my foraging across the รŽle-de-France in search of free fruit, which so far has included wild plums and elderberries, I finally chanced upon medlars. One of the goofiest fruits Iโ€™ve ever come across, theyโ€™re a member of the rose family and are prepared similar to rose hips, or backside-scratchers, which doesnโ€™t make me want to eat them. And my trusty fruit-searching sidekickโ€ฆ

Angel Food Cake

Last summer when I was in New York, a French acquaintance sent out a missive, looking for an Angel Food Cake pan in Paris. Iโ€™ve been thinking about making one for a number of years. But there are a number of American baked goods that donโ€™t quite translate, and this classic cake โ€“ made like a big, baked meringue โ€“ wellโ€ฆI was pretty certain thisโ€ฆ

Chocolate-Prune Cake

A while back, there was a spate of books about how to โ€˜sneakโ€™ ingredients that are โ€˜healthyโ€™ into food for your kids, to trick them into eating better. (Raymond Sokolov wrote an excellent rebuttal to that.) And recently there have been a few books written about how kids in France eat, and behave, better than their counterparts elsewhere. I canโ€™t really comment on them in-depthโ€ฆ

Kouign Amann at Le Grenier a Pain

Today is election day in France, and la Rรฉpublique has the choice of re-electing the current President, or ushering in a new one. For people who usually have a lot of opinions, my French friends arenโ€™t all that enthused about either one of the fellows. One is hoping to come into office, promising to represent Changement, and the other came into office five years ago,โ€ฆ
