Texas Peach Cobbler

Peach Cobbler has become the most requested dessert around here this summer. I donโ€™t think Romain had ever had a cobbler โ€“ I usually make crisps, which the French call crumbles. But Iโ€™ve been revisiting some cookbooks on my shelf that I hadnโ€™t used for a while and pulled down The Pastry Queen by Rebecca Rather, who was the owner of several bakeries in Texasโ€ฆ.

Onwardโ€ฆ

One thing vegans and vegetarians donโ€™t have to worry about is going into a โ€œmeat coma.โ€ But I do, as Iโ€™ve been in one twice during my week in Texas. On a previous trip, my friend Matt (who own Tรจo gelato and espresso shop, in Austin โ€“ and is a must-stop) whisked me away from the airport and took me straight out to Lockhart, knownโ€ฆ

Lockhart Smokehouse BBQ

It takes me a few days to readjust to life when I come back to the U.S.A. On our last trip, as we stepped off the plane at Dulles, we were confronted with a huge picture of a giant overstuffed sandwich plastered on the wall of a restaurant, which was aptly named, Potbelly. Like the clever titling of The Pretty Kitty salon that I passedโ€ฆ

Smittyโ€™s Market Barbecue

Someone had asked me how to get a lot of comments on a blog last week. So I answered that it was pretty simple: โ€œPut up a recipe with corn syrup in it.โ€ Since Iโ€™m in Texas, however, thereโ€™s another way to rile up the masses and that is to write up a barbecue joint. Honestly, there is nothing that divides Texans or Kansas City-folkโ€ฆ

Bubbaโ€™s Fried Chicken

The hardest part about traveling and teaching classes, which Iโ€™m doing this week in Texas, is that Iโ€™m not on vacation and hence thereโ€™s almost no time to do all the things in the various cities where I am that people tell me I should do. Or I should rephrase that and say that I donโ€™t have the time to eat all the things thatโ€ฆ

Hill Country Barbecue

I woke up this morning, and could not even make it through to the second half of my flagel. My stomach was stuffed from yesterday, which began at Baked in Brooklyn, then extended through to a burger and fries at Shake Shack, across the border to Connecticut for steamed lobster, then back into New York City with a quick detour through the Apple store, thenโ€ฆ

Teo Gelato

Every time I go to Austin, it seems like Iโ€™m running into town, doing a class, then racing on to the next city. So this last time, I slipped in under the cover of darkness, and arrived a day early. Sure I wanted more time to gorge on Texas bbq and Mexican food. But what I really wanted to do was spend some time atโ€ฆ

Kreuz Market BBQ

โ€œDo you want Texas barbeque, or Mexican food?โ€ Honestly, have you ever heard such sweeter words? When my friend picked me up by the airport in Austin, those were the first words out of his mouth. How did he know? Since Iโ€™d never ventured out much into the outskirts of the cities in Texas (itโ€™s hard when you donโ€™t have a car, or time), hereโ€ฆ

Austin, Texas

Before I high-tail it outta Austin, I thought Iโ€™d share a few things I ate while here. The tour of ice cream shops around town will have to wait until Iโ€™m back home, but there were plenty of other things to sampleโ€ฆ. Austin is the hip townโ€ฆor city, in Texas. I say โ€˜townโ€™ because it feels more like a big town than the capital ofโ€ฆ
