Miznon in Paris

Miznon is hard to write about, because once inside, itโ€™s hard to describe whatโ€™s going on. To figure out the menu, or the structure, can take some doing. Itโ€™s better just to go in with blind faith and have the experience, without trying to control or understand it. That said, Iโ€™m not a picky eater but I do like structure. So since Iโ€™m not aโ€ฆ

Spiced Kefta

Persian food, like many of the foods from a region thatโ€™s often broadly referred to as the Middle East, takes cues from a variety of influences and cultures as people traverse borders and bring their delicious foods with them. Which is why the food in America is so diverse; people have gifted us with foods from their homelands, such as tacos, sushi, pizza, beer, andโ€ฆ

Vegetarian Restaurants in Paris

[UPDATES: The Covid epidemic has affected some of the restaurants and other spots in Paris and while Iโ€™ve updated this list from time to time, some of the places may be closed, so best to check their website โ€“ and social media pages โ€“ to confirm places are open before heading out.] [Two excellent vegan pastry shops are VG and Land & Monkeys.] In theโ€ฆ

Black Bean Soup

When I was leafing through ยกCuba! โ€“ Recipes and stories from the Cuban Kitchen, I was reminded how much I like black bean soup. In theory, black bean soup is just a dark bowl of beans and doesnโ€™t sound all that exciting. Which is probably why I hadnโ€™t made it in a while. Also black beans arenโ€™t that easy to come by in France. Thereโ€ฆ

Ara Chocolat

Thereโ€™s no shortage of chocolate shops in Paris. Many of them are concentrated in areas like the Marais or Left Bank, which are swankier places set up shop, but offer easy access. So in what are called the โ€œdouble-digitโ€ arrondissements, youโ€™ll find more quirky places, and youโ€™ll never know what you might come across if you wander around them. Having dinner one night at Churrasqueiraโ€ฆ

Vaghareli Makai (Spiced Indian Corn)

If I had a nickel for every time I heard, โ€œYou should go to_________,โ€ Iโ€™d have enough money to upgrade on all thoseย flights that Iโ€™d be taking, which would make that prolific quantity of air travel a little more tolerable. Donโ€™t get me wrong, I appreciate suggestions and people looking out for me, so I donโ€™t miss anything great. But for anyone who has everโ€ฆ

Faux Gras: Vegetarian mushroom pate

People often think of Paris as a museum stuck in the past. Sure, one of the things we all love about Paris is the old charm that persists in the architecture, the culture, the cuisine, and in some cases, the way of thinking. But itโ€™s hard to stop new ideas, especially when they become widely adopted,ย as the next generationย comes along with different ideas and expectations.ย โ€ฆ

Crispy Baked Tofu

Someday, someone is going set up a camera in my place. At least I hope so. Because over the last three years, I can safely say that the craziest things have happened to me. Iโ€™ve often toyed with writing a book about it, but no one would believe me, and it would quickly get tossed into the fiction bin, dismissed as folly. Oddly, Iโ€™ve beenโ€ฆ

Fresh Corn Cakes

No oneโ€™s been quite been able to explain the popularity of canned corn in France to me. But the explanation of why fresh corn isnโ€™t familiar โ€“ or eaten โ€“ is that fresh corn is considered animal feed. Which still doesnโ€™t explain how something isnโ€™t fit for human consumption if itโ€™s raw, but if itโ€™s cooked and canned, thatโ€™s another story. And when itโ€™s inโ€ฆ
