The Shaken Martini

Itโ€™s funny how two ingredients can inspire so much discussion, conflict, anticipation, one-upmanship, derision, desire, ire, and postulating. Yes, Iโ€™m talking about the Martini cocktail. From what kind of gin to use, how much (if any) vermouth is added, whether itโ€™s shaken or stirred, if you should add bitters, and whether an olive or lemon twist is preferred, few seem to agree on what makesโ€ฆ

Grapefruit Vermouth Marmalade

When I arrived in Paris, I was surprised to see pink grapefruits as objects of such adulation. Mรฉtro billboard ads extolled the virtues of pink grapefruits, with ones from Texas being the most prized. Of course, it was a marketing campaign, but those grapefruits are rather good. When I lived in California, we didnโ€™t just have grapefruits, we had everything, from Oroblancos, to tangelos andโ€ฆ

Martinez Cocktail

Thereโ€™s a lot of discussion, and some dissension, about the origin of the Martinez cocktail. Itโ€™s made with gin and vermouth, and is served up (without ice), so there are certain similarities for sure. Plus the name, which has led people to speculate that the cocktail was invented in Martinez, California.

Five Favorite Food Addresses in Paris

ร‰pices & Saveurs Although it may seem like your typical Arabic รฉpicerie (food shop), of which there are many in Paris, Iโ€™ve shopped a lot of them and found ร‰pices & Saveurs especially well-stocked. The place is as neat a pin and in addition to the usual line-up of harissas, nuts and dried fruits in bulk, olive oils, and spices, I always findย curiosities on theโ€ฆ

The Chin Up, and Breuckelen Distilling

Whenever Iโ€™m in New York, I have a few drinking buddies all ready to hit a few bars for cocktails with me. One friend who I used to work with at Chez Panisse is at the top of that list and we both like our cocktails the same way: Not on the sweet side. So when we go out, we scan barย menus to find drinksโ€ฆ

Grilled Deviled Chicken

Being stateside in preparation for les vacances (vacation), I thought Iโ€™d corral Elizabeth Karmel, who Iโ€™d had dinner with last spring when we did a special cooking event together, into grilling dinner for me. I know, it was a little forward, but Elizabeth was the chef/consultation to Hill Country Barbecue in Manhattan, which has the distinct honor of pleasing even true, hard-coreย bbq aficianados. Sheโ€™s alsoโ€ฆ

La Maison du Whisky

This weekend, I think I just made my twentieth, and last, visit of the year to La Maison du Whisky. For the life of me, I have no idea what prompted me to go to a liquor store the Saturday before Christmas. Well, actually I do. I was preparing to refill one of my empty cocktail aging barrels and the next cocktail on the docketโ€ฆ

Negroni

Whew! It feels good to be back. I go caught up on a whole bunch of stuff. But boy, do I need a drink. Good thing I have this barrel of Negronis on hand. I featured my rotund wooden beauty in a recent newsletter, although I was concerned about mentioning my Negronis on social media because I often get in trouble with auto-corrected text. Butโ€ฆ

Manhattans

There comes a time in everyoneโ€™s life when one needs a Manhattan. During the past few weeks, that time had come for me. Actually, it came for me several times. Iโ€™ve recently been turned on to rye whiskey, and although folks online spoke up about various brands they like when I mentioned my sudden craving on social media, I learned that itโ€™s not something thatโ€ฆ
