In this monthโ€™s Hemispheres Magazine, the magazine of United Airlines, youโ€™ll find my article about exploring the chocolate shops of Paris. I talk about many of my favorite places, why I like themโ€ฆand what I recommend you get while youโ€™re there!

Although the article is only available on United Airlines flights in October (so book your flight to Paris today!) youโ€™ll find a special โ€˜Cyber Sidebarโ€™ at their web site of great addresses for le chocolat chaud, the famed ultra-thick and rich Parisian hot chocolate.

To read the bonus Cyber Sidebar on their web site, click on the bottom link-bar, the โ€˜Cyber Sidebarโ€™.

Itโ€™s my carnet of hot chocolate addresses in Paris, some are justifyably famous and well-known, and thereโ€™s a few secret new addresses that you probably donโ€™t know about, but should.

I acted on โ€œinsider informationโ€ from a few Parisians; at one very famous hot chocolate emporium, the saleswoman pulled me aside and secretly scribbled down a few of her personal favorites and handed it off to meโ€ฆfor research!

Next month, Iโ€™ll post the Parisian hot chocolate recipe given to me by a well-known pastry chef and served in his chic salon, which Iโ€™ve adapted for home cooksโ€ฆyouโ€™ll be sipping le chocolat chaud all winter long.

UPDATE: Hemispheres magazine has changed hands and removed many articles in their archives. If youโ€™re looking for my favorite hot chocolate addresses, Iโ€™ll be offering a directory of Paris sweet addresses in the near future.

The 2005 Eurochocolate Festival at Perugia, Italy, takes place this year between October 16 and 23. For further details, visit http://www.eurochocolate.com

David โ€“ shall you be going? Apparently it is a fantastic event and has been taking place every year since the 1900s.

Ooh โ€“ congratulations! Iโ€™ll have my sister pick up a copy for me, as sheโ€™s a flight attendant with United!!

Canโ€™t wait to see the recipeโ€ฆmy favorite way to prepare it has always been with the steamer attachment on an espresso machine. mmmmmโ€ฆfoamโ€ฆ

I eagerly await your recipe, David! Iโ€™ve done many trials at home, trying to create the Parisian hot chocolate that Iโ€™ve enjoyed from time to time, but the right balance of flavors still eludes me.

Dreaming of that hot, bittersweet brewโ€ฆ

Darn it. I fly on United almost every month but in October I have no trips planned.

I shall look forward to the recipe! (:

Youโ€™ll find Michael Lewisโ€™ Hot Chocolate Recipe from Wittamer in Brussels on my Recipe page, here at the site in the meantime. Enjoy!

And John, thanks for your invitation for a chocolate vacation in Perugia, but I have too much work right now here in Paris.

Yes, the Salon du Chocolate is in Paris towards the end of this month.
Itโ€™s not badโ€ฆif you donโ€™t mind paying 12 euros to be shoved aside by hoards of people grabbing and pushing to get a 1/4-inch piece of a free sample of chocolate. If you donโ€™t live in the France, I suppose itโ€™s a good way to see a lot of places under one roof with a like-minded mob of people (although many of the best places in Paris donโ€™t participate, people like Bonnat and Le Roux often participate) and thereโ€™s some foreign chocolates that are intriguing from Tokyo (yum!) and Moscow (umโ€ฆ).

in any case, i believe salon du chocolat will be held at the end of the month in paris, isnโ€™t it..?

On my flight to Atlanta last week, I read your article right off, (or did I do the 4 Sodukos first?), anyway, great read! On the flight back from WashDC, United announced your article by introducing you as โ€˜a long-time resident of Parisโ€™. Loved all the shop descriptions and will want to tic them off next time Iโ€™m in Paris, avoiding all those Monday closings.
