As you can imagine, after living in San Francisco for almost twenty years, I have some pretty wacky friends. While I donโ€™t want to recount everything that happened back in the days of free-love, many of us have grown up and gone on to tastier things.

One friend has a wildly successful cheese shop. Another opened a bakery , a chocolate factory, or became wine importersโ€ฆand more folks I knew opened bakeries, and ice cream shops, and chocolate shops, and bread bakeries, andโ€ฆ(heyโ€ฆsomeone remind me why I movedโ€ฆ)

But who was lovinโ€™ the apricot jam?

As it turns out, my friend Eric was, using the organic Blenheim apricots from one very old tree in his backyard.

A recent issue of Food+Wine called it โ€œโ€ฆsimply the best jam weโ€™ve ever tasted.โ€ And one of their editors liked it so much that heโ€™s now the first person on their waiting list for it. Sounds like itโ€™s (almost) jam worth moving back for.

    My mom use to make a roasted chicken with apricot jam and carmelized onionsโ€ฆI think I may need to buy some of this!

    Hmmmmโ€ฆ..my aunt also makes excellent apricot jam (and that too from her own organic tree).
    Soโ€ฆwhy buy when I can get it for free ;)

    Wow! Reading his site makes the jam sound like apricot-flavored crack. Sign me upโ€“I love the stuff! (Though I am very partial to my grandmotherโ€™s apricot jam. Hers is also made with apricots from an old, organic tree. But itโ€™s in Texas so Iโ€™m sure it tastes completely different.)

    Iโ€™ve signed up, and more than that, Iโ€™ve asked for a seed from their tree. They said they are happy to give seeds to anyone who wants one. So, when you sign up, ask for a seed and letโ€™s try and help save the Blenheim!

    Oh, my grandmother made apricot perserves to die for and I love your blog and your food and your books. And I will be purchasing โ€œThe Great Book of Chocolateโ€. I am a non-recovering chocoholic.

    I grew up eating nothing but my momโ€™s homemade jam and didnโ€™t purchase jam in a store until I was in my 20โ€™s. Apricot has always been my favorite (We had a tree in the front yard). I love the label on that jar so much that now I want to make some jam just so I can come up with a cool label ;-)

    All right, Iโ€™m on their waiting list. But I should tell you that Iโ€™m very prejudiced against apricots as a fruit. I have never met an apricot I liked, but I loves me some jam, so if my opinion about apricots change, Iโ€™m blaming you.

    I was among the apricots unlovers until I ate them off my neighborโ€™s tree. I have a theory: you have never had a really good apricot until you have eaten one under the tree in the sunlight that ripened it. Orchard grasses to lie in are an extra.

    Ergo, Mediterranean peoples and Californians have an edge on loving apricots.

    thank you so much for this tip! I grew up in the same area where they have their lovely Blenheim tree so of course i had to get on the โ€˜listโ€™. how i miss those childhood days of nibbling warm raspberries off the bush and wandering through the plum orchard across the street from my grandparentโ€™s house.
